Explore our range of genuine upholstery leather hides — aniline cowhide, oil tan semi-aniline buffalo, veg-tanned pebbled cowhide and high-shine chrome tanned sides. Every hide is manufactured at our own facility in Pakistan, tanned to export quality, and selected specifically for upholstery applications where durability and surface finish are the deciding factors.

What Is Upholstery Leather?

Upholstery leather is leather that has been tanned, finished and graded specifically for covering furniture, automotive interiors, and commercial seating. It differs from garment leather in weight and surface treatment: upholstery hides are typically thicker (1.2–2.0 mm), more resistant to abrasion and surface wear, and finished to withstand the friction of daily use on sofas, chairs and car seats.

Not all  genuine upholstery leather is the same. The tanning method, grain type and finish each determine how the leather looks, how it ages and what applications it suits. The four main types in our collection are explained below.

Types of Upholstery Leather We Stock

Aniline Upholstery Leather

Aniline leather is dyed with soluble dyes that penetrate the hide and leave the natural surface completely uncoated. It is the most natural-looking leather available — the grain, pores and unique markings of the individual animal remain fully visible. Aniline upholstery leather has a soft, warm hand feel and develops a rich patina with age. It is best suited to formal living rooms and private offices where direct sunlight and heavy soiling are limited. Our high-quality aniline upholstery cowhide is available in full hides for sofa and chair projects.

Semi-Aniline and Oil Tan Upholstery Leather

Semi-aniline leather receives a light protective topcoat over the aniline dye, which gives it stronger resistance to moisture, staining and fading while retaining most of the natural look and soft feel of a fully aniline hide. Oil tan semi-aniline leather is additionally treated with oils during the tanning process, producing a slightly waxy finish that is highly resistant to water and wear. Our oil tan semi-aniline upholstery buffalo and bovine hides in this category are particularly well-suited to high-traffic furniture, hospitality seating and automotive interiors.

Veg-Tanned Pebbled Cowhide

Vegetable tanning uses plant-based tannins rather than chrome salts, producing a firmer, more structured leather that stiffens with use and develops a deep patina over decades. Our veg-tanned pebbled cowhide has a distinctive grain texture created during finishing — the pebbled surface is visually rich and naturally hides minor scuffs and surface marks. This hide type is preferred for traditional and heritage-style upholstery, club chairs and bespoke furniture pieces.

High-Shine Chrome Tanned Cowhide

Chrome tanning produces a softer, more pliable hide that is easier to cut and sew than veg-tanned equivalents. Our high-shine chrome tanned cowhide has a polished surface finish that gives upholstered pieces a contemporary, sleek appearance. It is well-suited to modern furniture designs, reception seating and automotive door panels where a clean, glossy surface is required.

Upholstery Leather for Furniture

Sofa and armchair upholstery is the most common application for our hides. For domestic furniture, semi-aniline and aniline cowhide delivers the combination of softness, appearance and durability that leather furniture buyers expect. For hospitality and contract furniture — restaurant seating, hotel lobbies, waiting rooms — our oil tan semi-aniline buffalo hides offer the heavier weight and scuff resistance that high-traffic environments demand.

When calculating hide quantity for furniture projects: a standard three-seat sofa typically requires 50–60 square feet of leather. A single armchair requires 15–20 square feet. Full hides average 40–60 square feet each, depending on the animal. For large orders, contact us for a wholesale leather pricing and we can advise on yield and wastage for your specific pattern.

Upholstery Leather for Automotive Interiors

Automotive upholstery leather must meet different requirements than furniture leather: it needs to be flexible enough to form tightly over curved seat foam, resistant to UV fading from sunlight through windows, and able to withstand the friction of passengers getting in and out repeatedly. Our chrome tanned cowhide at 1.0–1.2 mm is our recommended automotive hide — it has the pliability needed for car seat sewing and the surface durability for daily use.

Automotive applications we supply for include car seat upholstery, steering wheel wraps, dashboard panel covering, door card trim, headrest panels and centre console covering. If you are working on a right-hand or left-hand drive project with specific colour matching requirements, contact us with your specification and we will match from our current stock.

Why Choose eLeatherHub for Upholstery Leather?

  • Pakistan-manufactured with direct tannery ownership: Our upholstery leather hides are available in four distinct tanning types. We produce our own hides. No middleman, no markup between tannery and you. Same export quality as European tanneries at significantly more competitive prices.

  • Halal-certified hides: Our upholstery leather for sale is processed under halal-compliant conditions. This matters for manufacturers supplying Muslim-majority markets, Islamic finance-compliant businesses, and buyers with halal supply chain requirements.

  • Four distinct leather types in one collection: Aniline, semi-aniline oil tan, veg-tanned pebbled and chrome tanned — allowing you to match the right leather to your specific application rather than settling for one generic type.

  • Wholesale and retail: Order a single hide for a chair project or a bulk wholesale order for furniture production. Wholesale pricing is available on request.

  • Export-ready supply: We regularly ship to buyers in the UK, EU, USA and GCC. Hides are rolled and packed for international freight.

How to Care for Leather Upholstery

Genuine leather upholstery lasts for decades with basic maintenance. Follow this routine to keep your hides in best condition:

  1. Dust regularly: Wipe the surface monthly with a clean, dry microfibre cloth to remove dust and surface particles before they abrade the finish.

  2. Clean spills immediately: Blot — do not rub — any liquid spill with a dry cloth. Rubbing spreads the stain and pushes it deeper into the grain. For residual marks, use a leather cleaner applied to a cloth, not directly to the hide.

  3. Deep clean every 3–6 months: Apply a leather cleaner appropriate to your hide type (avoid alcohol-based cleaners on aniline leather — they strip the natural oils). Work in circular motions with a soft cloth, then wipe clean.

  4. Condition after cleaning: Apply a leather conditioner to restore oils removed during cleaning. This prevents the leather from drying, cracking and losing flexibility. Annual conditioning is sufficient for low-use pieces; every 3–6 months for high-traffic items.

  5. Protect from sunlight: Direct, prolonged sunlight fades and dries leather. Position furniture away from windows or use UV-protective window film. Apply a UV-protective conditioner for additional protection.

  6. Avoid heat sources: Do not place leather furniture near radiators, underfloor heating vents or open fires. Sustained heat dries out the leather from the inside.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION

What is upholstery leather?

Upholstery leather is genuine animal leather — typically cowhide or buffalo — that has been tanned and finished specifically for use in covering furniture, automotive seating and commercial interiors. It is selected for its durability, surface consistency and resistance to the wear and friction of daily use.

What type of leather is best for upholstery?

The best leather for upholstery depends on your application. For domestic sofas and formal furniture, full-grain or semi-aniline leather offers the best balance of appearance, softness and longevity. For high-traffic commercial or hospitality seating, oil tan semi-aniline buffalo or heavy bovine hides are more durable. For automotive interiors, chrome tanned cowhide is preferred for its flexibility and UV resistance.

Is genuine leather upholstery worth the price over faux leather?

Yes, for most applications. Genuine leather upholstery develops a patina and improves in appearance with age; faux leather cracks, peels and deteriorates. Genuine leather also breathes more naturally, making it more comfortable in warm conditions. Over a 10–20 year lifespan, real leather upholstery has a lower total cost because it does not need replacing every 3–5 years as PU leather typically does.

How much leather do I need for a sofa?

A standard three-seat sofa requires approximately 50–60 square feet of leather. A two-seat sofa needs 35–45 square feet. A single armchair needs 15–20 square feet. These are net figures — allow an additional 10–15% for cutting wastage. Contact us for a quote based on your specific sofa dimensions.

Can I buy upholstery leather wholesale?

Yes. We stock wholesale upholstery leather in all four hide types — aniline, semi-aniline, veg-tanned and chrome tanned. Contact us with your required hide type, quantity and colour and we will provide a wholesale quote. We supply furniture manufacturers, automotive upholsterers and interior design studios regularly.

Where can I buy upholstery leather hides online?

You can buy upholstery leather online directly from eLeatherHub. We offer aniline cowhide, semi-aniline oil tan buffalo and bovine leather, veg-tanned pebbled cowhide and chrome tanned cowhide — all available for retail and wholesale orders with international shipping.
